BERG ISEL SKI JUMP

DESIGNED WITH MATHEMATICAL PRECISION

AUSTRIAN NATIONAL ARCHITECTURE PRIZE 2002
The ski jump is a concise, purely functional object, an apparatus for high performance sports, formed with rigorous mathematical precision. The architectural challenge lay in incorporating a novel, rather alien element into the predetermined shape, namely, a café and a panorama terrace.

THE TOWER
The shaft of the tower is embedded in a huge foundation plate, 16 by 20 meters, atop of which are constructed three ground floors to house technical, storage and personnel facilities, together with an entrance floor. The visitors’ lift ascends to the terrace, approximately 43.5 meters up.

THE HEAD OF THE TOWER
Atop the concrete shaft of the tower, a three-storied "hat" of steel containing restaurant, panorama platform and rescue level, was placed. The storys extending outwards reach as far as 12 meters above the shaft of the tower.

THE ACCELERATION RAMP
The truss, i.e. supporting structure for the steep acceleration ramp, was constructed as a steel-lattice formed trough without any pylon supports along a length of 68.5 meters, slanted to a 35-degree incline, with steel trusses, a so-called fish-belly construction. The preload force is then conducted into the stiffening trusses as pressure reinforcement.
